Can it really be stopped?
After reading the “Remixing Culture” article, it still seems to me that no one has come up with a realistic way to stop digital piracy. With such online file sharing mechanisms as torrents, it is becoming increasingly impossible for regulators to make these files unavailable for download. How can you stop people from downloading the newest movie, sometimes before it even hits theaters, when there are sometimes in excess of 10,000 people all making this file available at the same time? Arresting all of these people is not practical, if not completely impossible. If they try to remove the software that makes this downloading possible, a copycat program will hit the Internet in a matter of hours. Perhaps our view of “copyrights” and “intellectual property” needs to be reconsidered…
